Notes On Cleaning Hardwood Floors

There’s something magical about hardwood floors. They look amazing when they are in place, and they can last a lifetime, when taken care of properly. With constant care, you can rest assure that they will not only create a wonderful aura to your home’s interior, but they will give you a sense of elegance. One thing that you will need to remember about this flooring type, however, is that it needs constant care. You cannot allow the maintenance process to let up, because if you do, you could end up causing damage to areas, and replacing sections of this type of floor can be quite expensive overall. Consider the following tips for cleaning hardwood floors and maintaining them for a long time.

Sweeping Initially

The first thing that you should do is sweep often. However, make sure that you use a soft tip broom or brush to get this done. Do not purchase hard brooms with tough bristles, as that will eventually cause damage to the surface. You want to brush your floors with care, using soft, even strokes to pick up dust and debris.

Deeper Cleaning

When you’re done sweeping, you’ll want to clean up through the traditional mopping process. However, you’ll want to add a subtle twist. Modern floors aren’t usually sealed with elements that will degrade with water or cleaning solutions. That is good news, as you can mop the floor with a “damp” process. This option allows you to get a mop and then ring it out to only have a small amount of cleaning solution on it. Once you get it run out, you will use the mop across sections of your floor, and clean up that way. The goal is not to add puddles of water across many areas, but rather have sections that are free and clear of moisture and debris. Make absolutely sure there is no standing water, and you’ll get this done fast.

Simple Detergent Mixture

If you’re going green, then you’ll want to use ¼ cup dish washing liquid and warm water. This mix is a simple “greener” solution to many of the solutions you will find in stores. Using the same methodology above, only with this detergent will help you clean up and keep things free and clear of problems. This can help you keep scuff marks away, as well as scratches.

At the end of the day, you want to make sure that you spot clean, and sweep often. You don’t need to mop a great deal of the time, but it does help from time to time.
